TL;DR
- 51 poise is the number that changes your playthrough. The wiki's own tally: 51 poise endures 1,727 PvE enemy attacks, while 11 poise endures 797.
- 101 poise is the ceiling worth paying for โ 2,037 attacks โ and no poise value covers the remaining 2,692, which need stagger-immunity effects instead.
- Heavy load costs more than poise buys. Past 70% of your maximum equip load the roll loses a frame of invincibility, recovers twice as slowly, and stamina regeneration is penalised by about 20%.
- Full sets grant no bonus. Build the four pieces that reach your target poise at the lowest weight โ the wiki's own ratio pick is Iron Helmet + Fingerprint Armor (Altered) + Crucible Greaves + Gold Bracelets.
How poise actually works
Poise is not a percentage and it is not a save. It is an invisible second health bar โ "poise HP" โ that enemy attacks drain. Five rules cover almost every question players ask about it.
- Your displayed poise is your poise HP. When that bar reaches zero you are staggered, and it instantly refills to full.
- Overflow does not carry over. The wiki's own example: at 51 poise HP, a 50-poise hit leaves you at 1; the next identical hit does not leave you at -48 โ it staggers you and resets you to 51.
- Player poise never regenerates on its own. It fully resets after 30 seconds without taking a hit, so it is a chain of light hits, not one big one, that reliably staggers you.
- Your Toughness value is one tenth of the displayed poise. That is the threshold an incoming attack must exceed to cause hitstun at all.
- Enemies play by different rules. NPC poise HP regenerates after 6โ15 seconds without being hit (80 poise = 6 seconds, 200 = 15), and whether an enemy staggers is governed by the attack's DamageLevel rather than its poise value. Two wiki examples: Maliketh is set to take no stagger from any DamageLevel, while Malenia is staggered by everything except DamageLevel 0, 5 and 8.
The three poise breakpoints
This is the table to screenshot. The wiki counted every PvE enemy attack in the game and asked which ones stop interrupting you at each poise total.
| Poise | PvE attacks it endures | What it actually changes |
|---|---|---|
| 11 | 797 (mostly projectiles) | The floor: arrows and small enemy chip damage stop interrupting you. Cheap, and reachable on almost any light build. |
| 51 | 1,727 | The practical target: most standard PvE attacks no longer cause a weak stagger. The wiki notes the Knight Set reaches exactly this number. |
| 101 | 2,037 | The ceiling: adds the heavy hitters that 51 still loses to. Expensive in both weight and Endurance. |
| โ | 2,692 unendurable | No poise value saves you from these. They need stagger immunity from effects such as Endure, Baldachin's Blessing or the Ironjar Aromatic. |
Equip load: what every roll tier costs you
Poise only matters if you are still rolling. Equip load is the ratio of everything you have equipped โ weapons, armor and talismans, but never your inventory โ to your maximum equip load, which Endurance raises. Rolls and backsteps always cost 12 stamina regardless of tier, so the tier is about invincibility frames and recovery, not stamina per roll.
| Weight ratio | Status | Roll i-frames | Recovery | Behaviour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| โค 29.9% | Light Load | 13 frames (433ms) | 8 frames (233ms) | Longer roll distance and faster backstep recovery than Medium. |
| 30.0% โ 69.9% | Medium Load | 13 frames (433ms) | 8 frames (233ms) | Identical invincibility and recovery to Light โ the difference is distance, not safety. |
| 70.0% โ 99.9% | Heavy Load | 12 frames (400ms) | 16 frames (533ms) | Shorter roll, double recovery, stamina regeneration penalised by about 20%. |
| โฅ 100.0% | Overloaded | โ | โ | No rolls and no backsteps at all. Movement becomes slow and cumbersome. |
The practical reading: the 30โ69.9% band is free โ same i-frames as Light, so there is no defensive reason to starve yourself of armor below Medium. The line that matters is 70%: that is where you pay a frame of invincibility, double the recovery and a fifth of your stamina regeneration for more poise and damage negation.
Two sets that anchor the scale
You do not need to memorise 100+ sets. Two numbers bracket the whole range, and both come straight off their wiki pages.
| Set | Poise | Weight | Physical negation | Where it comes from (wiki) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bull-Goat Set | 99.99 โ the highest possible | 63 | 38.505 | Volcano Manor |
| Knight Set | 51 โ exactly the practical breakpoint | 25.3 | 24.6 | Purchased from the Twin Maiden Husks in Roundtable Hold |
Bull-Goat is the wiki's stated maximum: a full set of it gives 99.99 poise at weight 63, and the wiki notes that no single armor set reaches 100. It is the answer to "how much poise can a set give me" โ and the answer to "what does that cost" is 63 weight, which is most of a normal Endurance budget before you have equipped a weapon.
The Knight Set is the other end: exactly 51 poise at weight 25.3, bought from the Twin Maiden Husks in Roundtable Hold. That is the cheapest complete-set route to the 1,727-attack breakpoint, and it is available without leaving the hub โ which is why it is the set most players should judge their custom build against.
The custom set recipe
Mixing pieces is normal: the wiki states plainly that wearing all four pieces of a set grants no additional effect, so nothing is lost by mixing. The wiki's own recommendation for the best defenses-to-poise-to-weight ratio is a four-piece mix:
- Iron Helmet (helm)
- Fingerprint Armor (Altered) (chest)
- Crucible Greaves (legs)
- Gold Bracelets (arms) โ the light slot that keeps the total weight sane
Treat it as a template rather than gospel: the point is the shape, not the four names. One heavy chest piece plus one light arm slot buys most of the poise, and the helm and legs are where you trim weight to stay under 70%. Check the poise number in your own status screen after each swap โ that is the only figure that matters.
Items that bend the poise rules
Armor is not the only lever. The wiki lists three that reduce incoming poise damage rather than raising your poise HP:
| Item | Effect (wiki) |
|---|---|
| Bull-Goat's Talisman | Reduces poise damage taken by 25% |
| Baldachin's Blessing | Reduces poise damage taken by 34% |
| Radiant Baldachin's Blessing | Reduces poise damage taken by 45% |
| Endure / Ironjar Aromatic | Temporary stagger immunity to certain DamageLevels, independent of poise |
A 25% reduction is not a small edit: it is the difference between a 51-poise set surviving typical hits and a 38-poise set doing the same, which is roughly two armor slots of weight saved. If you are chasing 101 poise, check the talisman maths before you spend fifteen levels of Endurance you did not need.

Four steps to pick your armor
- Decide the poise target first. 51 if you are melee and want most hits to stop interrupting you; 11 is a fine answer for a pure caster who never wants to be in range.
- Check the roll tier before the poise number. If the set pushes you past 70%, either raise Endurance or drop a heavier piece โ losing a frame of invincibility to gain poise is usually a bad trade at this skill level.
- Mix pieces and re-read your status screen. Full sets give nothing extra, so borrow the heavy chest you need and keep the arms light. Iterate until the poise number lands on your target.
- Only then spend talisman slots. Bull-Goat's Talisman's โ25% poise damage can replace two armor slots of weight; check it before levelling Endurance further.
Unknown until tested on your version
- Exact totals for individual sets beyond the two worked here (Bull-Goat, Knight) โ the wiki's per-set pages carry them, and this guide deliberately does not restate numbers it has not read.
- How Shadow of the Erdtree and Tarnished Edition sets compare against base-game poise tables on the current patch.
- Whether the wiki's Patch 1.07 poise values still hold on your build โ the wiki flags the update itself, but this guide was not tested in-game.
- Enemy-by-enemy stagger outcomes: those depend on DamageLevel effects that override poise, per the wiki.
Playnesta Verdict
Aim for 51 poise, stay under 70% equip load, and stop treating armor as a list to collect. The Knight Set is the honest benchmark โ exactly 51 poise, bought at the hub, no dungeon required โ and any custom mix that beats its weight at the same poise is a genuine upgrade. The trap is chasing 101 poise with a heavy roll: you will survive the hit that staggers you and then fail to dodge the one that kills you.
FAQ
What is the best armor in Elden Ring?
There is no single best set โ the wiki's own maximum is the Bull-Goat Set at 99.99 poise and weight 63, which is far too heavy for most builds. For most players the best armor is whatever reaches 51 poise while keeping the weight ratio under 70%.
Is 51 poise enough?
The wiki's tally says 51 poise endures 1,727 PvE enemy attacks, versus 797 at 11 poise and 2,037 at 101. For normal exploration and most boss fights, 51 is the number that stops the constant interrupt. If heavy attacks still knock you out of animations, the answer is usually the Bull-Goat's Talisman rather than more armor.
Does poise regenerate?
Not for the player. Your poise HP refills only when it is broken, and it also fully resets after 30 seconds without taking a hit โ so spacing is part of your poise budget. Enemy poise, by contrast, regenerates after 6โ15 seconds without being attacked.
Is heavy load worth it?
Rarely. Heavy Load (70.0โ99.9%) drops you from 13 to 12 invincibility frames, doubles roll recovery from 8 to 16 frames and penalises stamina regeneration by about 20%. At 100% or more you cannot roll at all.
Do I get a bonus for wearing a full set?
No. The wiki states directly that wearing every piece of a set grants no additional effect, so mixing pieces for poise and weight is the intended optimisation rather than a compromise.
Where do I find the numbers for a specific set?
On that set's wiki page โ the armor hub links every one, with poise, weight and damage negation per piece. This guide covers the rules; the wiki carries the 559-piece table.
