Last updated: September 26, 2026 · Tested against Fextralife Builds hub (171 builds) + 3 deep build pages, all curl 200 on 2026-09-26 · Goal: pick one starter archetype and know when to respec
Method: every build below is a real Fextralife wiki archetype — names, main stats, weapons and skills read from the shipped wiki pages (Builds hub + Samurai + Moonveil Shinobi + Bloodhound, all curl 200 on 2026-09-26), cross-checked with the official Bandai site (curl 200). Damage numbers, exact stat spreads and upgrade caps change per patch and are Unknown here: this guide picks the archetype, the wiki owns the numbers. Controls: pick a starting class once, feed one main stat, respec later via Rebirth. A build is one main stat mastered, not five stats sprinkled.

TL;DR — pick one line and commit

  • First playthrough, melee: Samurai (Dexterity, Uchigatana) — wiki's own first-run pick.
  • Melee that never falls off: Bloodhound (Dexterity, Bloodhound's Fang) — viable the whole game per wiki.
  • Melee mage: Moonveil Shinobi (Intelligence, Moonveil) — level-100 frame, Transient Moonlight.
  • Patient second character: Sanguine Samurai (Dexterity/Arcane, Rivers of Blood) — late-game bleed.
  • Big weapons, simple plan: Champion (Strength, Lordsworn's Greatsword) — level-50 frame, Hero or Vagabond start.

1. Samurai first — the wiki's own beginner answer

The Builds hub lists the Samurai build explicitly for a first playthrough: Dexterity main, Uchigatana with Unsheathe, starting from the Samurai class. It pairs with our weapons guide's verified early find (Uchigatana, Deathtouched Catacombs, Limgrave). One main stat, one weapon class, one skill to learn — that is the whole plan until the capital.

2. Bloodhound for the entire game, not just the opening

The Bloodhound build is tagged whole-game viable: Dexterity main, Bloodhound's Fang with Bloodhound's Finesse. If the Samurai is the tutorial answer, this is the answer that never expires — same stat, higher ceiling, no respec required at any point.

3. Moonveil when you want spells with your sword

The Moonveil Shinobi build is an Intelligence frame at level 100: Moonveil with Transient Moonlight. It pairs with our weapons guide's verified find (Moonveil, Gael Tunnel, dropped by the Magma Wyrm there). Intelligence also unlocks the staff and sorcery game later — one stat, two playstyles.

4. Sanguine Samurai is a second character, not a first

Dexterity/Arcane at level 150 around Rivers of Blood and Corpse Piler is a late-game bleed machine — and a trap for beginners, because its core weapon arrives late. Roll it as character two, after the Samurai taught you the moves. Bleed pays best when you already know boss timings.

5. Champion keeps Strength honest

Strength at level 50 around Lordsworn's Greatsword with Golden Vow, starting Hero or Vagabond. No status effects, no spellbooks: level Vigor and Strength, upgrade one greatsword, learn one weapon art. Boring on paper, unbeatable for players who dodge by walking away.

FAQ

Can I change my build later?

Yes, via the Rebirth mechanic: defeat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, then trade a Larval Tear per respec. Nothing about your starter is permanent past her arena.

What level do builds assume?

The wiki frames builds at community level bands (50, 100, 150): 50 covers the opening, 100 the midgame, 150 the endgame and PvP. Treat the number as a destination, not a requirement.

Do I need the DLC for these five?

No. The five above are base-game frames. DLC-tagged wiki builds (Star-Lined Samurai, Carian Knight) need Shadow of the Erdtree and sit outside this guide.

Which starting class should I pick?

Match the wiki frame: Samurai for the Samurai build, Hero or Vagabond for Champion. Class only sets the opening stats — the main stat decides the build.

Where are the official facts?

Check Bandai Namco's official ELDEN RING page and the Steam store page first. We will refresh the frames when a patch moves the numbers.

Playnesta Verdict

Start Samurai, feed Dexterity, respec never — then roll Moonveil or Sanguine as character two once boss timings feel slow. A build is one main stat plus one weapon skill learned by heart, and Rebirth means the only wrong choice is splitting five stats at once.
