Last updated: September 18, 2026 · Tested on Playnesta's Star Invaders build (upstream toivjon/html5-space-invaders @ b0751af) · Goal: clear every alien wave with 3 lives
Method: every rule below was verified against this site's playable build — constants read from the shipped JavaScript (672x768 portrait court, 1/2 player select, arrows to move, Spacebar to fire, Enter to continue, 3 lives each, 4 destructible shields), all scripts pass syntax checks, every referenced asset returns 200, and a headless-browser playtest confirmed the game starts and animates with zero errors. Controls: arrow keys + Spacebar on desktop, tap to start and Left/FIRE/Right buttons on mobile.

1. Press 1, not 2, for your first games

Key 1 starts a solo run, 2 starts two players taking turns with separate lives and scores. In turn mode you wait through the other player's whole run, so learn the alien patterns solo first — press 1 on the welcome screen.

2. Fight from behind the shields

Four shields sit between you and the invaders and are destroyed pixel by pixel. Park under a shield edge: alien missiles chew the shield instead of you, while your own laser fires clean through the gap. When a shield is nearly gone, slide to the next one — open sky is where runs end.

3. Keep moving — never camp one spot

Alien missiles include rolling shots that always launch from the invader nearest to you. A parked cannon is an easy target. Strafe in short bursts between your shots so the nearest alien keeps re-aiming at where you were, not where you are.

4. Hunt the saucer, but count your shots

A bonus saucer crosses about every 1,200 ticks and its points depend on a lookup table and your shot count. Only one of your lasers can be on screen at a time, so a wasted shot means a silent gun for its whole flight. Fire, watch the result, then fire again — spam shooting leaves you defenseless.

5. Clear from the edges and watch the descent

The wave ends when every alien is destroyed, but each level also ends badly if any alien lands. Edge columns shoot less accurately at you while you collapse the formation inward, and fewer remaining aliens move faster and shoot more often. The last five aliens are the most dangerous part of every wave — slow down and pick them from under cover.

FAQ

How many lives do I get?

Three per player. In two-player mode each player has their own 3 lives, score, and saved state while the other takes their turn.

What happens after game over?

The GAME OVER text appears with PRESS ENTER TO CONTINUE — press Enter (or tap the ⏎ button on mobile) to return to the welcome menu, then press 1 for a fresh run.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes — tap the game once for single player, then hold the ◀ / ▶ buttons to move and tap FIRE to shoot. The 672x768 portrait court scales to your viewport with no sideways scroll.

Where can I play it?

Right on this site's star-invaders page. The game is a self-hosted modification of the MIT-licensed html5-space-invaders by toivjon; license and attribution are listed under the game.
