1. Start vs easy AI and take every single jump
Jumps are forced in spirit even where the build lets you choose: every jump you skip is a piece the AI takes for free next turn. On easy (depth 1) the AI barely looks ahead, so practice spotting every capture on the highlighted squares first. Players who count jumps before moving win; players who move then look lose pieces weekly.
2. Trade one-for-one only when you are ahead
Swapping piece-for-piece when tied changes nothing but the move counter — do it only holding a material lead or to open a crowning lane. Behind on pieces, dodge exchanges and force the AI into positions where its jumps expose more than they gain. Count pieces every five moves, not when the board is already empty.
3. Keep the back rank home until the endgame
Unmoved back-rank pieces deny the AI crowning squares and anchor your defense for free. New players march everything forward and wonder why the AI crowns first — hold two back-rank guards until the middle clears, then advance them as a pair. A guarded back rank turns half the AI's attacks into one-for-one trades you win.
4. Crown early, then let the king hunt
A king moves and captures with freedom no single piece has, so the first crowning race decides most games: push one piece down an open file with jump-threats clearing its path. Once crowned, use the king to herd remaining singles toward your back rank instead of chasing across the board — herding wins in six moves what chasing wins in sixteen.
5. Climb easy, medium, hard in order
The AI's three depths (1/3/5) are three different opponents: easy misses two-move traps, medium punishes them, hard sets them. Beat easy five times in a row before touching medium, and study each loss — hard exploits exactly the jumps you stopped checking. Local two-player is the final exam: a human spots the traps no depth setting finds.
FAQ
How do I move?
Pick two-player or vs-AI mode and a rules version, press Start Game, then click a piece and one of its highlighted squares. Highlights show every legal move — if a square is not lit, the move is illegal there.
What rules versions are there?
English and Brazilian checkers. Learn one version's crowning and capture habits before switching — mixing rules mid-learning doubles every mistake.
How strong is the AI?
Three depths: easy 1, medium 3, hard 5. Easy is a sparring partner, medium punishes missed jumps, hard plans traps. Start on easy.
Can two people play?
Yes — local two-player mode on the same screen, same click-and-tap controls, no account needed.
Where can I play it?
Right on this site's crown-clash page. The game is a self-hosted modification of the MIT-licensed checkers-with-ai by Felipe Teles; license and attribution are listed under the game.
