1. Solve the shortest words first — crossings pay double
Three- and four-letter entries (cat, dog, air, rome, moon) cross the most neighbors per letter, so each solved short word hands free letters to two or three longer answers. Open every puzzle by scanning the clue lists for the shortest entries and filling those first. Long words look tempting but every letter you place in them is a guess; every letter a crossing gives you is a fact.
2. Read Across and Down as one puzzle, not two lists
Each white square belongs to two answers at once, so progress on Across is progress on Down. When an Across clue stumps you, jump to the Down clue crossing its emptiest square — one solved crossing letter often unlocks the whole Across word. Players who alternate lists finish minis twice as fast as players who grind one list top to bottom.
3. Lead with vowels inside any word — A, E, then O
Nearly every answer in the 44-word list carries A or E, so when a word has two or more blanks, spending taps on vowels buys the most information. A consonant-first fill burns taps on letters that fit anywhere; a vowel either lands or eliminates a whole family of candidates. This matters more here than in letter-guessing games because a wrong letter sits visible and misleads your crossings until you overwrite it.
4. Use Show Answers to study, then redeal and replay
Show Answers is a study tool, not a score: reveal a stuck board, read how the answers interlock (which letters do the crossing work?), then hit Another Crossword for a fresh random deal and replay the pattern. Two studied boards teach more than ten blind ones. Never leave a revealed board up and call it solved — the win banner only counts boards you fill yourself.
5. Stuck means redeal, not stare — the pool is 44 words deep
Every Another Crossword press draws a brand-new random set from the 44-word list at your chosen size, so a hostile board costs one tap to replace. If two clues resist everything you know, the board is allowed to be hard — redeal and take a friendlier draw. Tilt-staring at the same five clues is how a two-minute mini becomes a twenty-minute one; the drawer also lets you drop to 5 words for the smallest, fastest boards.
FAQ
How do I enter a letter?
Click (or tap) any white square to open the A-Z letter pad, then pick a letter. There is no physical-keyboard entry — mouse clicks on desktop, finger taps on touch screens, same pad both ways.
How many words are in a puzzle?
Five by default, with 10, 15 and 20 available from the top-left menu. Larger boards reuse the same 44-word pool, so expect familiar answers to reappear crossed differently.
What counts as winning?
Filling every white square with its correct letter triggers the green Puzzle complete banner. Show Answers reveals the solution but does not count as a win.
What if the board never loads?
It always builds on first load — the game re-draws in-page until the word set interlocks instead of showing a blank page. If you ever see an empty grid, reload once; a fresh random draw fixes it.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes — squares and letter keys are tap-native with enlarged touch targets, and the grid area scrolls inside the page so 390px viewports never scroll sideways.
