1. Circle wide, never hug your own tail
New players die hugging the body they just grew — keep at least two empty cells between your head and every body segment. Wide loops give you one free direction at all times; tight coils give you zero. When in doubt, spiral outward toward open space instead of inward toward food.
2. Slow down by planning two turns ahead
The tick is a fixed 250ms per step — you cannot slow the snake, but you can slow your decisions by always knowing your next two turns. Enter every corridor with the exit already chosen; players who decide turn-by-turn at speed 250 die at the second consecutive corner. Look at where your head will be, not where it is.
3. Eat along the edges, live in the center
Food near walls is bait: grabbing it parks your head against a dead end with the body streaming behind. Cruise the center third of the board and only detour to edges when the return path is already clear. The center gives four escape directions; an edge gives three and a corner gives two.
4. Use your own body as a wall on purpose
Once you are long, the body becomes a herding tool: loop it to fence food into a pocket, then eat inside the pocket with nowhere to crash. This only works while you keep the pocket bigger than your turning radius — shrink it gradually as the score climbs, never all at once.
5. Chase the high score in sessions, not in runs
The build saves your best score, so treat runs as disposable experiments: one run for aggressive edge-eating, one for pure center-cruising, then keep whatever style scores higher. Records fall to comparison, not to repetition — review what killed each run before restarting.
FAQ
How do I steer?
Arrow keys or WASD on desktop, swipe on touch screens. The snake moves on a fixed 250ms tick — steer ahead of it, not with it.
What ends a run?
Biting your own body. There are no lives or continues — each run ends at the first self-collision and the score is banked against your saved best.
Is there a speed-up as I eat?
No — the tick stays at 250ms from the first bite to the last. Difficulty comes entirely from your growing length, which is why spacing discipline matters more the longer you survive.
Does it save my best score?
Yes — the best-score/highscore record persists between runs. Beat it and the new mark is saved automatically.
Where can I play it?
Right on this site's neon-trail page. The game is a self-hosted modification of the MIT-licensed snake-html5 by zuramai; license and attribution are listed under the game.
