Minefield Scout Beginner Tips: Clear the Board Without Hitting a Mine (2026)

1. Start on Easy 9x9 and open from a corner
Ten mines on 81 tiles is the gentlest teacher: your first click opens a wide safe area, and corner openings give you numbered borders on two sides at once, which means twice the information per revealed tile. Do not touch Medium 16x16 until you can clear Easy without guessing — the 40-mine board punishes every habit Easy forgives.
2. Flag only the mines you are sure about
A flag is a statement, not a bookmark: every flag should come from a number that accounts for all its neighbors. Early on, a revealed 1 touching exactly one unopened tile means that tile is a mine — flag it and move on. Random flags feel productive but hide the board state you need to read next.
3. Learn the 1-2-1 wall pattern
When 1-2-1 sits in a row along an edge or an opened border, the two tiles under the 1s are always mines and the tile under the 2 is always safe. This single pattern clears more mid-game walls than any other trick, and it appears constantly on Easy. Spot it, flag the pair, click the safe middle, and the wall collapses.
4. Count remaining mines before every guess
The counter tells you how many mines are left unflagged — use it as a lie detector. If a region's numbers demand three mines but only two remain unflagged board-wide, your earlier flags are wrong somewhere. Wrong-flag hunts start with the guesses you were least sure about, not with the newest deductions.
5. When forced to guess, pick the tile with the shortest odds
Some boards genuinely require a guess — prefer the tile constrained by the most numbers, since each adjacent number is an independent witness. A tile touching three different numbers is far safer than a tile touching one. And guess at the edge of the opened area, never in the middle of the unknown: a wrong edge guess costs one tile, a wrong middle guess costs the game.
FAQ
How do I reveal and flag tiles?
Click (or tap) to reveal a tile; right-click (or long-press) to flag a suspected mine. Numbers count the mines touching that tile in all eight directions, including diagonals.
What are the three difficulties?
Easy is 9x9 with 10 mines, Medium is 16x16 with 40, Expert is 30x16 with 99. Start on Easy — the patterns are identical, only the punishment differs.
Is the first click always safe?
Open from a corner of a fresh Easy board and you will practically always get a wide safe area to work with. If a board opens badly, hit Play Again — a fresh deal costs nothing and a cramped start teaches nothing.
Does it track my best time?
Yes — each difficulty keeps its own Best record, shown next to the Time counter in the English menu. Race your own Easy record before moving up.
Where can I play it?
Right on this site's minefield-scout page. The game is a self-hosted modification of the MIT-licensed minesweeper by Flyer Qu; license and attribution are listed under the game.
