Last updated: September 20, 2026 · Tested on Playnesta's Gem Shuffle build (upstream eaprelsky/zen-match @ b46bd2f) · Goal: reach the level score target before your moves run out (level 1: 2400 points in 24 moves)
Method: every rule below was verified against this site's playable build — constants read from the shipped game (8x8 board, 6 gem types, 24 moves / 2400 goal at level 1, cascade multiplier, special-gem scoring, freeze schedule, shuffle costs a move), scripts pass syntax checks, the shipped file returns 200, and a headless-browser playtest confirmed loading, tap and swipe swaps, overlay flow, touch input, and zero errors. Controls: click or tap/swap on the board, desktop and mobile. This is the classic match-3 formula, rebuilt here as an original-named playable.

1. Every swap costs a move — make each one score twice

You get 24 moves for 2400 points at level 1, so each move must average 100 points: a plain 3-gem match pays only 30. Never swap just to "see what happens" — pick swaps that clear 4+ gems or drop new matches into place (cascades), because every cascade step re-scores the whole clear with a 1.5x / 2x multiplier. A swap that triggers a two-step cascade is worth three lazy swaps.

2. Chase cascades, not single matches

Match clears pay the gem count times 10, multiplied by 1 plus half per extra cascade step — so setting up falling gems that match on their own pays far more than the swap itself. Before swapping, look one step ahead: which columns will drop, and will the falling gems land in matching triples? Bottom-of-board swaps cause the longest falls and the most cascades.

3. Save specials for frozen boards

Special gems (line blasts, bombs, planes, rainbow) clear at +15 to +20 per gem with a +500 combo kicker — several times a plain match. From level 2, frozen tiles appear that no plain swap can touch, and tapping a special next to them is the reliable answer. Do not fire a special into an open board for style points; bank it until ice shows up or the move count gets tight.

4. Watch the freeze schedule

Freeze chance grows with the level (up to 35%) and heavy freeze — needing two hits — joins from level 4. Frozen gems cannot be swapped, so a frozen cluster shrinks your real board. Prioritize swaps that touch frozen edges early, while you still have moves to spare; a board half-frozen with 5 moves left is already lost, so hit retry instead of donating moves.

5. Shuffle costs a move — spend it, don't waste it

Both the Shuffle button and the automatic reshuffle (when no valid move exists) cost one full move. If you cannot find a scoring swap in ten seconds, one paid shuffle beats donating a move to a 30-point pity match — but never shuffle twice in a row hoping for luck. Each shuffle is a move that could have scored 100+.

FAQ

How does scoring work?

Each clear pays its gem count times 10, multiplied by 1.5x for a two-step cascade, 2x for three steps, and so on. Special-gem clears pay +15 to +20 per gem, plus a +500 bonus on special combos.

How many moves and points per level?

Level 1 gives 24 moves for a 2400-point goal; both scale with the square root of the level, so later levels ask for more points but also grant more moves. Progress (your level) is saved on the device.

How do I open frozen gems?

Match beside them or fire a special gem touching them. Heavy freeze (level 4+) takes two such hits. Frozen gems cannot be selected or swapped.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes — tap a gem then tap an adjacent gem, or swipe across two gems, to swap; tap a glowing special to fire it. The board resizes down to 390px-wide viewports with no sideways scroll.

Why does the game header say Zen Match?

That is the upstream project's original title, kept verbatim inside the game along with its license. The Playnesta page, guide, and translations use the original name Gem Shuffle so nothing impersonates the upstream author.

Where can I play it?

Right on this site's gem-shuffle page. The game is a self-hosted modification of the MIT-licensed zen-match by eaprelsky; license and attribution are listed under the game.
